Understanding the Approach

How Orca Noah Text Works

A visual scaffold that keeps the story intact while making big words easier to decode, lightening the load so readers can focus on meaning.

The problem many striving readers face

Many students can sound out big words in isolation, then fall apart in real reading. Too much effort goes into decoding, while comprehension and fluency are reduced.

Decoding load is too high

Long words require so much cognitive effort that meaning gets lost. Students decode the word, then forget what they were reading.

Fluency breaks down

Each stumble on a multisyllabic word breaks reading flow, reducing stamina and discouraging continued reading.

Age-appropriate texts feel out of reach

Students in Grades 4 to 8 deserve stories that match their interests and maturity, but the vocabulary can become a barrier.

The Solution

What Orca Noah Text does

Noah Text® keeps standard spelling but makes patterns visible.

1

Syllable chunks become visible
Inside longer words, alternating bold and regular text shows where the word naturally breaks into chunks, without changing the spelling.

2

Long vowels are marked
A visual cue below the vowel signals that it says its own name—a consistent, unobtrusive marker that builds pattern recognition.

3

Nothing else changes
Inside longer words, alternating bold and regular text shows where the word naturally breaks into chunks, without changing the spelling.

How it Works

Classroom Ready

How to use Orca Noah Text in the classroom

No training required. Use Orca Noah Text® in independent reading, small-group intervention, paired reading, content-area support or ELL accommodations.

The transition away from Noah Text® is built in—use it for confidence and stamina, then bridge back to the plain-text Orca Currents edition.

Noah Text® can be identified as a modification on Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) or as an accommodation in Section 504 grants.

“You’re going to see some words in a special format. The bold and regular parts show where the word breaks into chunks. Some vowels are marked to show they say their own names. This doesn’t change the words—it just makes them easier to figure our so your brain can focus on the story.”

Use this script when introducing Noah Text® to students for the first time. It positions the format as a tool, not a label.
