About the Format
Is Orca Noah Text® decodable?
No. Not in the controlled-phonics sense. It keeps normal spelling and vocabulary, and adds visual cues that support decoding.
Does it change the words?
No. The words are identical to the original Orca Currents edition. The same story, the same vocabulary, the same reading experience. The support is entirely visual, built into the typography. Bold and regular chunks show syllable breaks; a small mark below certain vowels shows long vowel sounds.
How is Orca Noah Text® different than a levelled reader?
Leveled readers adapt vocabulary and sentence complexity to match a student’s reading level. Orca Noah Text® does the opposite: it keeps the full, age-appropriate text and adapts the visual presentation to lower the decoding barrier. Students get the real story with added support, not a simplified version.
What does the Noah Text® scaffold actually look like on the page?
Inside longer words, alternating bold and regular type shows where the word naturally breaks into syllable chunks. For example: suddenly. Some vowels have a small mark below them to indicate a long vowel sound (the vowel “says its own name”). Nothing else changes—the font, size, layout, and story are all the same as the plain-text edition.

Who is Orca Noah Text® For?
Orca Noah Text® is primarily grades 4–8 striving readers: students who want age-respectful stories but get stuck on multisyllabic words, fluency and stamina. It’s also well-suited for older multilingual students building English reading skills, students with dyslexia who benefit from additional decoding support and any reader who struggles with longer words but doesn’t need (or want) simplified content.
Can I use it with the whole class, or just struggling readers?
You can use it with the whole class! In fact, introducing Noah Text® universally often reduces stigma. When everyone gets a chance to try the format, it becomes a classroom tool rather than a marker of difficulty. Some teachers do a class-wide introduction and then allow students to choose which format they prefer for independent reading.
Is it appropriate for students with dyslexia?
Yes. Noah Text® is recommended by structured literacy specialists who work with readers with dyslexia. The syllable-chunk marking aligns with what students are often taught in structured literacy programs. It makes those patterns visible in connected text. It complements, rather than replaces, phonics and decoding instruction.
Instruction and Use
Does Orca Noah Text® replace phonics instruction or intervention?
No. Orca Noah Text® is a reading support, not an instructional program. It complements instruction by reducing cognitive load during real reading, so the skills students are learning in phonics or intervention can consolidate through actual reading experience. Use it alongside whatever approach you already use.
Do I need special training to use Noah Text®?
No training is required. The one-page quick start and teacher guide cover everything you need. The format is self-explanatory once students understand the two visual cues: syllable chunks and long-vowel marks. How do I introduce it to students?
Teach it as a tool. Let everyone try it. Position it as “training wheels for big words” that you can remove when you’re ready, a framing that students respond to well. The key moves: introduce it universally, make opting out feel like progress (not a withdrawal of support), and celebrate when students shift to the plain-text edition. How to students move back to regular print?
Use a three-phase approach: first, build confidence and stamina reading in Noah Text®. Then compare short excerpts side by side, one paragraph in each format. Finally, shift more reading to the plain-text Orca Currents edition while keeping Noah Text® available for dense sections or new books. The paired editions are designed specifically to make this transition easy.
In practice, many students move back and forth between Noah Text® and plain text throughout the day. This flexibility reinforces recognition of important orthographic patterns in standard print.
